Mortgage Busters

July 4th, 2011 posted by admin

In the old days, before factory farming and cheap meat, American farmers used to call their hogs ’mortgage busters’. That is because they could breed a few, feed them on feed and farm waste and then when they were in a financial bind, take them for slaughter and make a quite a bit of money. Here at Weber Farm we have been thinking about different types of things that we could raise that would be similar. Last year we raised turkeys from chicks in order to mature in time for Christmas. It worked pretty well, but we had a difficult time getting the right number of buyers and getting them to those buyers in a cost effective manner. It is simply too expensive to ship a 20 pound turkey Federal Express. This year my daughter suggested we try using eBay Couriers. It was perfect to get somebody, to sort the whole thing out for us. We are advertising our special hand reared organic turkeys and we are going to be able to sell them on anywhere in England and Wales. It seems to have cracked open a whole new world of possibility to getting some pretty fragile goods to buyers quickly and afford-ably. It was such an issue with the strawberries this year because we have two wonderful patches of a boutique breed that is incredibly delicious, but looses half of its taste within hours of being picked. It was incredible, we found a jam maker on Ebay near Cardiff who bought the whole lot!
